Political filing season is over. Of the 100 House seats on the May 20 ballot, 16 will have Democratic primaries and 22 will be contested in the fall general election. Of the 18 Senate seats on the ballot, three will have Democratic primaries. Just one seat, Senate District 30, will be contested in November. In that race, Sen. Gilbert Baker, R-Conway, is seeking re-election against Democrat opponent Joe White of Conway.
Dwayne Dobbins filed for a seat currently held by his wife Monday. In 2005, then-Rep. Dwayne Dobbins was charged with felony sexual assault after a woman reported that Dobbins improperly touched her at her home in September 2004, when she was 17. Dwayne Dobbins later pleaded guilty in Pulaski County Circuit Court to misdemeanor harassment and resigned from the Legislature as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. He was sentenced to a year’s probation, fined $1,000 and ordered to undergo counseling.
There will be no new trial for a McGhee area trucker convicted in the 2006 murder of Casey Crowder. The defense alleged juror misconduct.
Washington County Sheriff officials are investigating why a 38 year-old female suspect was left in closet sized cell without food, water, or bathroom over the weekend – 96 hours. She was in there four days. The woman was taken to a local hospital and a new bailiff has been suspended.
The man police say killed a University of Arkansas co-ed over the weekend said he’d done something bad to Katharine “Katie” Wood, but blacked out and doesn’t remember exactly what.
A 29-year-old Pine Bluff man was recovering at Jefferson Regional Medical Center after he was shot over his shoes.
The UALR Trojans’ first 20-victory season since 1996 came to an end with a 70-55 loss to Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament semifinals at the Mitchell Center.
Texas A&M and Arkansas are the newest long-term tenants of the Dallas Cowboys’ burgeoning new $1.1 billion stadium. The renewed football rivalry will begin Oct. 3, 2009, the first game of an initial 10-year contract. But the schools can pick up five four-year options that could extend the series to a 30-year deal.
