Tuesday morning summary 3/25/08

My early morning rundown on what’s  happening is on K-106.3 and Spirit 93.3, which is also broadcast on 100.7 in Heber Springs. You can hear me every 30 minutes!

Arkansas starting linebacker Freddie Fairchild spent the night in the Washington County jail. The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas reports He was arrested on charges of battery and false imprisonment.

The Arkansas Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee will convene this morning to settle an election dispute arising from the 2006 runoff for Senate District 16 Arnell Willis is claming fraud in the election of Jack Crumbly. This will be the first of any such action in Arkansas legislative history.

FEMA will begin inspections of flood damage today.. The White River came out of the banks at Des Arc and Prairie County taking at least 50 homes, some built on wooden stilts, and it is rising. Some highways have been closed. A Stone County man is dead and a Washington County man is missing.

The New York Times has a major story about Billy Wolfe, a Fayetteville high school student, whose parents are suing the parents of an alleged school bully and several John Does after an alleged incident in a shop class.

Rep. John Boozman is on a week-long visit to Africa that he said will focus on military and defense issues.

UALR and local supporters are hoping to bring the NCAA regional tournaments back to Alltel and the earliest that might happen is 2011. It was a sellout and mostly good reviews.

Sales of previously owned homes increased unexpectedly in February after six months of decline, but private economists said it was too soon to say if the prolonged housing slide is coming to an end.

Folks in Booneville are wondering what happens next after a fire completely destroyed the Cargill meat processing plant there. Booneville has a population of around 4,000 and there are 800 jobs at Cargill.

Chesapeake Energy plans to double the number of rigs in production on the Fayetteville Shale within the year. Chesapeake also announces an even larger natural gas production area, the Haynesville Shale in Louisiana.

Residents pleaded with Pulaski County officials to spend more time thinking about building regulations in Lake Maumelle’s watershed before voting on a proposed ordinance.

Former Arkansas State head coach Dickey Nutt has interviewed for the vacant head coaching position at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Monday afternoon.

The mayor of Widener is facing several charges, including driving while intoxicated. Arkansas State Police observed a vehicle driven by Abron Pitts crossing the center line on Ark. Highway 38, at about 6:50 p.m. Saturday. Pitts is charged with DWI, drinking in public, no proof of insurance, no seat belt and driving left of center.
