The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System faces claims that it destroyed documents from human experiments and failed to report the deaths of more than 100 study subjects, a charge UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson describes as overblown. The Washington Times reports the Veterans Affairs Administration’s inspector general’s office outlined the problems in a report that will be released today.

 

Rep. Sharon Dobbins, the wife of former lawmaker Dwayne Dobbins, was the only lawmaker to vote against the House rule that would prohibit former members who gave up their seats in a plea bargain from serving afterward.

 

In a 4-3 vote the Parole Board recommends that Gov. Mike Beebe spare the life of death-row inmate Frank Williams Jr. Supporters and attorneys contend Williams is mentally retarded.

 

The State has reached a settlement with the German company that produces the ASIS accounting software that caused so much trouble in the Huckabee administration. They will provide free upgrades, assistance, and be allowed to keep over $2 million in withheld payments.

 

The University of Central Arkansas board will meet today and likely discuss President Lu Hardin’s contract, which expires next month.

 

Central Arkansas has suspended seven players and dismissed one on the eve of the football season. Sophomore running back Curtis Marks of Memphis faces felony charges of credit fraud and theft after police say he stole between $500 and $2,500 by using a credit card at a gas station.

 

Coach Bobby Petrino says during Arkansas’ Media Day that the defense has been installing new schemes to include what they’re calling a “Jack” linebacker. The Razorbacks plan to employ a safety at what defensive coordinator Willy Robinson calls a hybrid position.

 

Acxiom Chief Executive Officer John Meyer on Tuesday says the company hopes to open a center in east Asia similar to its operations in Poland.

 

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has received a 2.5 million dollar grant to provide colorectal cancer screenings and education in two Mississippi Delta counties.

 

Producers and staff for the Emmy Award-winning reality television show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, met in west Little Rock on Tuesday morning to rally the volunteers, tradesmen and suppliers who will help build a new house next week for a still unknown Arkansas family.

 

Fifty for the Future, a group of local business leaders, has hired an Atlanta-based consultant to help develop a county-wide strategic plan. Members will pay Market Street Services up to $150,000 to assist in the five-year planning effort.

 

Now isn’t the time to change Little Rock’s 2 percent tax on restaurant meals and hotel rooms, a mayor’s committee studying the levy said in its final report.

 

Police are searching for clues in a rash of arsons that occurred in rural Randolph County.

 

A Booneville principal set to star in a new reality show called “The Principal’s Office” has himself been suspended after being called to the superintendent’s office. Steve Halter says it’s not over the TV program. It’s on something called “TruTV.”

 

The largest independent theater owner in Arkansas has renewed his offer to the City of Searcy to invest the cash and equipment needed to return the Rialto theater to its glory days. Mark Smith runs theatres in Little Rock, Hot Springs, and Bellville, Ill.
