University of Central Arkansas President Lu Hardin will undergo eye surgery in Memphis on today to treat the cancerous tumor recently found behind his right eye.

Lawmakers may consider raising Arkansas’ cigarette tax by around 50 cents a pack to fund a proposed statewide trauma system. State Rep. Gene Shelby says he has spoken with the governor’s office and other lawmakers about bringing up the issue next year.

It may come as a surprise to some of you to know that communities surrounding Little Rock actually sign “no-compete contracts” with each other urging sister cities not to “steal each other’s customers.”
Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Matt Jones pleaded not guilty to possession of cocaine, a charge that carries up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.Jones faces an Oct. 10 trial date. Two days before the Jaguars play at Denver.
Tiffany Nix faces a hearing on whether she violated terms of her probation in the death of Isaac Brian in 2004. Nix admitted passing the stopped school bus and got 10 years probation, but prosecutors say she has been slow and uncooperative and now faces new charges of leaving the scene of an accident.
Mitchell Johnson, who as a boy helped shoot and kill four students and a teacher during a schoolyard ambush, will face a Sept. 4 sentencing hearing on a federal weapons charge.
Helena-West Helena police will request that the curfew area observed since last Thursday be expanded when the city council meets in a special meeting at noon today.
