Former Governor and Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee is on the road to Dayton, Ohio to be on the stump with John McCain introduces his choice for vice-president.

Melvin Maples of Enola surrendered to law enforcement after fleeing Secret Service agents and Faulkner County Sheriff Deputies. The Mt. Vernon-Enola elementary and high schools were on lockdown for a time yesterday while swat teams and helicopters searched for Maples in nearby woods. It all started over Maples alleged infatuation with Chelsea Clinton.

Lu Hardin will step down as president of UCA on September 16.Hardin will be on sabbatical for the rest of the year, and will then get around $670,000 to buy out his contract. That will be paid out over 39 months.

A Pulaski County Circuit Judge has ruled that the new state protocol for conducting executions must be subjected to public comment before being implemented, and that puts the September 9 scheduled execution of Frank Williams in question.

Shawanna Nelson, the woman who is suing the Arkansas Department of Corrections over its policy of shackling women during childbirth, is going to get a rehearing in her case by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Pine Bluff police have discovered the charred automobile belonging to the couple found murdered inside a burned out home.

Research into mining of lignite, a low-grade coal found in south Arkansas, and its use as an alternative energy source will be supported by a $1 million federal grant to Southern Arkansas University.

A downtown hotel developer has placed River Market District property under contract and plans to build a hotel. McKibbon Hotel Management Inc. of Gainesville, Ga. has placed the parking lot at Commerce Street and President Clinton Avenue under contract for its third Rivermarket hotel.

Mayor Tyrone Williamson paid more than $200 to the city of Russellville last week after questions were raised recently about his use of a city-issued cell phone in May and June from a cruise ship in international waters.

Murphy Oil will evacuate its non-essential personnel in the path of potential hurricane Gustav in the Gulf of Mexico.

Arkansas’ football game against Louisiana-Monroe on Sept. 6 will be offered on pay-per-view for $34.99.

For the Razorbacks, another rebuilding season starts tomorrow evening against the always formidable Leathernecks of Western Illinois.  ASU’s Red  Wolves play Texas A&M. Harding Bisons plays Missouri Southern in Joplin.

Nathan Brown threw for 367 yards, including three passes for scores, to lead Central Arkansas to a 38-14 victory Thursday night over Division II Henderson State.
