Early voting for the Nov. 4 general election begins statewide today. There are seven presidential candidates and a bunch of initiated acts and questions.

Beautiful weather helped the Arkansas State Fair set a new attendance record this year. 467,007 people walked through the fairground gates. The new figure was a 5 percent jump over last year’s.

Entergy Arkansas wants a final ruling from state utility regulators on how much it owes ratepayers after a January 2007 finding that it had mismanaged coal supplies, causing rate increases in 2005 and 2006

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences won’t lobby the state Legislature next year to scrap quotas that reserve spots in medical school for students from certain areas of the state.

The National Association of State Boards of Education is honoring Claiborne Deming, president and chief executive of Murphy Oil, with the Friend of Education Award.

Pilgrim’s Pride, the largest U.S. chicken producer, plunged 24.53 percent in trading Friday on speculation the company may file for bankruptcy if it fails to refinance its debt.

A city official says he thinks final approval of an Amtrak passenger stop in Hope is close enough that he’s ordered signs that will be put along streets and highways in the area, directing travelers to the downtown train depot.

State Rep. Steve Harrelson is urging Amtrak not to abolish the only ticket agent position at the Texarkana station when agent Merle Hogue retires at the end of this month.

Brian Barnett was arrested by Searcy Police midday for refusing to cover profanity on a political sign he was holding on a street corner. Barnett opposes Republican Kyle Reeves and Democrat Monte Betts in the race for House District 50.

Tony Alamo stands charged of transporting a minor across state lines for illegal activities. His indictment was unsealed in Texarkana Friday, and Little Rock attorney John Wesley Hall, Jr represents Alamo.

Little Rock police arrested Bessie Clegg Johnson on a second-degree battery charge after receiving information that a 3-year-old developmentally disabled  boy in her foster care had been whipped with a belt. According to the affadavitt, the injuries “appeared as multiple loop marks, bruises and small healing cuts over [the child’s] back, legs, abdomen and forehead, some of which appeared to be healing, and others appeared as fresh injuries.”

A Saline County man will spend a month in jail and give up his pit bulls after pleading no contest to a felony dogfighting charge. Patrick Janiszewski also won’t be allowed to own pit bulls during a six-year probation.

A Lake Village doctor, Shirlene Hill, is charged with felony controlled-substances fraud and felony conspiracy to introduce controlled substances into the bodies of others.

Four Van Buren police officers involved in two separate incidents — one involving a controlled substance and the other a physical altercation — were suspended for 30 days without pay earlier this month.

North Little Rock officials are balking at a new $1 cash fee that CenterPoint Energy wants to charge the 7,000 customers who pay their monthly gas bill in person at city offices.
