Another Monday, another week

My weekly column is in today’s Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. It’s about one of the classic movies and how it fits into current events/ Guess which movie I’m talking about. Look for me on the Voices page in the Arkansas section every Monday.

A soldier from Mountain Home is dead from injuries he suffered in a vehicle accident in Iraq. Spc. James M. Clay died in Anbar Province in western Iraq, according to a news release from the Defense Department.

Some legislators are calling for harsher penalties for employees convicted of stealing public funds. Members of the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee expressed their frustration after learning that city employees in Russellville, Dyer, Stuttgart and Bald Knob were not sentenced to prison.

As Arkansas lawmakers prepare to hammer out enabling legislation for a lottery to fund college scholarships, some are questioning why the state’s scholarship fund is already running at a $59 million surplus.

The State Hospital fired three nurses and suspended three other employees for failing to follow procedures after a patient hanged herself in late October.

State auditors have discovered that Karen Brewer may have embezzled a lot more than the previously estimated $42,000 originally suspected from the DF&A office that sells vanity license plates. Now, it looks a little more like $260,000.

Roby Brock reports at TalkBusiness.net that, despite a Supreme Court ruling, action from the Attorney General’s office, and the departure of the state’s biggest payday lending operation, two payday lending stores remain open in Mountain Home.

It was not much of a tremor, but the U. S. Geological Survey confirms a quake, of magnitude 2.9, occurred at 7:47 a.m. Saturday, 14 miles north of Hector in Pope County. There was an even smaller quake in northeast Arkansas later in the day.

An Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife officer is dead after the helicopter he was in crashed in Cleburne County. The officer was participating in an operation aimed at catching night hunters. The crash took place five miles northeast of Quitman on Highway 25. Monty Carmikle of Heber Springs has been with the AGFC since 1985.

Conway officials are starting to talk seriously about setting up local transit services, including a fixed route bus system.

Pine Bluff Mayor Carl A. Redus Jr. fell short of a second term as mayor by one vote Friday night and will face City Treasurer Gregory Gustek in a runoff Nov. 25.

Authorities say a stabbing suspect at an assisted living center in Haskell was fatally wounded after he attacked a Saline County officer. Jerry Baer reportedly attacked Sgt. Cecil Dobbs with a knife, striking the Saline County officer above the right eye. Police officer Kyle Vaugh then shot Baer, killing him.

Westside school gunman Mitchell Scott Johnson was sentenced to 12 years in prison for stealing a credit card on the day his son was born.

Jennifer Marie Spaeth is facing charges after a Conway Police Department investigation into a series of car accidents she caused on June 6. Prosecutors say she may have been mistakenly been given a wrong drug by a local pharmacy before the accident but they also believe she illegally received prescription pain meds.

A bizarre story from Fayetteville: A University of Arkansas employee arrested last week for allegedly videotaping a 16-year-old girl as she showered is exonerated, after his girlfriend admits that she was trying to frame him.

For the second time in a week, the Pulaski County Special School District is closing an elementary campus because of roof safety concerns and assigning pupils of the Clinton magnet in Sherwood to an alternate location at First Assembly of God until further notice.

With the help of a $9.2 million grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, Little Rock’s Museum of Discovery is planning a renovation of its building in the downtown River Market District that will include the addition of three new galleries and a new entrance on President Clinton Avenue.

The results of the Metroplan transportation outreach are in and the most congested intersection is Shackleford and Financial Center Parkway, The 40 – 430 interchange is bad. Surprises include Arkansas 5 between I-30 and Hot Springs Village. Also, the intersection of Alexander and Vimy Ridge Road was mentioned.

Jermain Taylor put on one of his best performances in winning a unanimous decision over Jeff Lacy in their 12-round super middleweight bout at Vanderbilt University.
