VATICAN CITY – The Vatican on Monday will make its most detailed defense yet against claims that it is liable for U.S. bishops who allowed priests to molest children, saying bishops are not its employees and that a 1962 Vatican document did not require them to keep quiet, The Associated Press has learned.
If this is true, why did the Vatican act to move Cardinal Law at the very moment he was facing criminal prosecution?
Did “independent” bishops conspire to move suspected criminals? Is that obstruction of justice? What about the RICO laws?
Does this new defense mean the Catholic Church no longer considers itself, from the legal perspective, “hierarchical?” That has implications.
This is a sorry stupid response. I like Benedict XVI and the Catholic clergy I know are great people. This kind of thing does not serve them or the Household of God. How can the Catholic Church be so disconnected. I am not an RC, but we could sure use a credible moral voice in this country and this assures that the RC Church is going to be very seriously hindered.
