A kaddish for Joe

You know it’s REALLY Christmas when Paul Greenberg retells the story of Joe Telles.

He was just another bum riding the rails, and a sick one at that. What was to be done with him? He wasn’t sick enough for the hospital to take him in, but he was too sick for the Salvation Army to put him up.

And so, all through the short, waning hours of the shortest day of the year, he was trundled back and forth, from one station of his cross to the next, until by nightfall there was no place for him but the county jail. Not because he belonged there, but because he didn’t belong anywhere else.

It is in the Democrat-Gazette, right across from my column on this Monday (I am honored to say). You will need a subscription, or you could still buy a copy of the paper. It wouldn’t kill ya’.

A kaddish for Joe.
