GOP against women and children: Lynched! Friday June 17, 2011

There are only two things on my mind today. One is a vote by Arkansas Republican Congressmen Griffin, Womack and Crawford on the Agriculture appropriation. There are two aspects of this bill that deserve our attention. One is a deadly attack on pregnant women’s nutrition in the form of a disastrous cut in the WIC program. The other has to do with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which lies at the heart of our current economic troubles because of its role in regulating derivatives. This financial instrument is at the center of oil price speculation and the subprime mortgage bust. The second matter I approach is a worry about Sen. Mark Pryor. He is part of a move to help disaster victims with tax benefits. That seems rather indirect and a kiss-up to Republicans who have labeled aid in such instances “immoral.” Pryor may have some say on the budget negotiations that go along with the debt ceiling increase. I may be wrong, but I am concerned that Mark Pryor, of whom I have the deepest warm admiration and respect. needs to be encouraged to hold out against the hardcore Republican tactics. The show is here.
