House passes bill that would divert money from electrical upgrades on N.J. Northeast Corridor Line | NJ.com.

I do not normally delve into the world of rail passenger transportation on this blog, but this story provokes a couple of observations. This is especially true since Arkansas Tea Party Rep. Rick Crawford has been instrumental in its passage.

I direct your attention specifically to the elimination of funds for updating the electrical system on the northeast corridor. This is an urgently needed project. The wiring system upon which Amtrak trains run was originally constructed in the 1930s. There are frequent failures and crowded trains are delayed.

I merely wish to note that the very people who have eliminated an item of desperately needed work are the same people who will most vigorously criticize Amtrak for its failings (of which it does have many). Failure to do routine repairs will result in inefficiency, delays, and loss of revenue. This is in addition to the added expense of performing emergency replacements under time restraints.
