Time to stand firm against LR city hall and power brokers

While the number of impoverished Americans is at a lifetime high, Little Rock City Hall and its little brigade of well-heeled special interests, have figured out another way to stick it to the poor and quickly fading middle class. In a special election, using directed mail advertising to likely supporters and funded by substantial out-of-town contributions, they have imposed one-half billion dollars in new taxation on those who spend money in Little Rock.

The Chamber of Commerce led cartel spent around $200,000.00 on the campaign and opponents spent under $10,000.00, so who do you think is going to win? Nonetheless, the sensible observers of Little Rock’s out-of-touch city government managed to get out 47%. The whole thing was decided by about 1700 votes. That means that there is a continuing strong discontentment with the crowd of smug self-satisfied rich guys that run city hall.

Understand this. There is absolutely zero chance this enormous financial windfall will do much for Little Rock folks. The backers have already shown their disposition to take care of special interests by passing over excellent local direct mailing companies in favor of well-connected out-of-town outfits. This will be the general rule on how the HALF-BILLION DOLLARS will be spent. This is a boondoggle of momentous proportions in the making. Remember, “strong” Mayor Mark Stodola and City Manager Bruce Moore both make $160,000.00 a year no matter what and could hardly give a rip what happens to the rest of us.

The make up of our city board of directors assures the continuance of a cruel domination by well-set and insulated individuals. The at-large seats, together with representatives from wealthy districts, guarantee that regular folks will never stand a chance, BUT WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TODAY.

Max Brantley, on today’s Arkansas Times blog, calls the method of conducting this election “cynical, dishonest effort by cynical, dishonest people who do not want democracy to prevail when it comes to their money.” He is so right and this is the time for decent people to DOUBLE DOWN in our unyielding opposition to city government. It is them versus us and it is a war for survival. Taking a penny off every dollar spent by a working family may not mean a thing to the clueless fat cats that run things, but this is life of death for real people.

This is a time for increased vigilance. The enemy will screw up and, when that happens, we must be ready to seize the advantage , and bring up the heat. This is war.
