From the State Education Department.

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Department of Education will sponsor an event Saturday with a goal of pairing schools with highly motivated and energetic individuals interested in the teaching profession.

“Becoming an Arkansas Teacher” will be from 9a.m. to noon at the Holiday Inn-Airport, 3201 Bankhead Drive, Little Rock.

“Through events like this one, we are able to highlight teaching as a rewarding and fulfilling career, and bring together interested schools with potential new teachers to help us continue to improve education in Arkansas,” said Camille Sterrett, the department’s teacher recruiter.

High school students, college students, or those interested in changing careers are welcome. So far, more than 225 people have registered to attend.

Schools are especially interested in those wanting to teach in the areas of mathematics (Grades 7-12); science (Grades 7-12); gifted and talented education; foreign language; and special education.

“For anyone considering becoming a public school classroom teacher, now is an exciting time for education in Arkansas,” said Arkansas Education Commissioner Dr. Tom Kimbrell. “We have more technology in our classrooms, more resources focused on our schools, and a support system in place for new teachers.”

Participants may receive information about financial aid; learn more about the state’s Non-Traditional Licensure Program; and visit with department staff. Deputies from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand for fingerprinting, which is part of the state and national background checks required for all Arkansas licensed teachers.

The event is free, but participants are asked to register. To register, visit or call 501-683-1088.
