Dianne Feinstein To Introduce Assault Weapons Ban On First Day Of Congress

I posted an initial reaction to the Connecticut school shootings here and followed up with some words about Mike Huckabee’s grandstanding on school prayer here. Both are on my Glad Streams blog. Here is the word on Sen Feinstein and the entire story with the link below.

WASHINGTON — In the wake of Friday’s mass killing at an elementary school in Connecticut, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Sunday that she plans to introduce an assault weapons ban bill on the first day of the new Congress.

“I’m going to introduce in the Senate, and the same bill will be introduced in the House — a bill to ban assault weapons,” Feinstein said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The shocking murder of 26 children and adults in Newtown, Conn., on Friday has sparked a national discussion on gun control, with mostly Democratic legislators saying laws need to be tightened.

This is such an obviously terrible idea, I am almost speechless. There must be some sort of research that suggests the assault weapons bad is a political winner. But, stop! It is nothing but another diversion from the real problems; persistent unemployment, health care, and the runaway costs of war.

Everybody with an idiotic opinion gets to shout it out, names will be called, truth beaten into the ground, and nothing practical accomplished. At the end of it all, the country will be even more divided. Every closed mind will be sealed a little tighter and disrespect will reign supreme.

We have not figured out how to deal with mentally ill people and perhaps we never will. Guns, violence, and harsh verbal abuse are apparent just about everywhere. The debate over weapons is not worth the grief or the damage done to our national family.

Agree, outlawing guns will not take them off the street anymore than outlawing drugs has kept heroin and meth have kept them off the street. Until we take care of the underlying causes no laws will work.
