From the State Education Department.

LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas Department of Education will sponsor an event Saturday with a goal of pairing schools with highly motivated and energetic individuals interested in the teaching profession.

“Becoming an Arkansas Teacher” will be from 9a.m. to noon at the Holiday Inn-Airport, 3201 Bankhead Drive, Little Rock.

“Through events like this one, we are able to highlight teaching as a rewarding and fulfilling career, and bring together interested schools with potential new teachers to help us continue to improve education in Arkansas,” said Camille Sterrett, the department’s teacher recruiter.

High school students, college students, or those interested in changing careers are welcome. So far, more than 225 people have registered to attend.

Schools are especially interested in those wanting to teach in the areas of mathematics (Grades 7-12); science (Grades 7-12); gifted and talented education; foreign language; and special education.

“For anyone considering becoming a public school classroom teacher, now is an exciting time for education in Arkansas,” said Arkansas Education Commissioner Dr. Tom Kimbrell. “We have more technology in our classrooms, more resources focused on our schools, and a support system in place for new teachers.”

Participants may receive information about financial aid; learn more about the state’s Non-Traditional Licensure Program; and visit with department staff. Deputies from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand for fingerprinting, which is part of the state and national background checks required for all Arkansas licensed teachers.

The event is free, but participants are asked to register. To register, visit http://www.TeachArkansas.org or call 501-683-1088.

Some reviews of this fall’s television offerings

Just a few short notes on the new season and some old favorites.

Harry’s Law is one of the best written shows now in its second season. Kathy Bates stars and she has turned around her career very late in life. You can see why this might be appealing to me. Bates is up against a beautiful young unscrupulous prosecutor. Should be a fine season.

X Factor. The good news is that the contestants are a lot better than American Idol. How can that be? It is a puzzle. The auditions included the exploitation of a developmentally disabled man. Classy, guys. Real cool. Yes, you were very nice when you were done with the poor man but it still leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Survivor. Never trust the nephew of Russell Hance. He is a snake. Period. Marie and I have watched every episode, and I am sure we will continue. The human interactions are too good.

House goes to prison. My goodness. This is one of the best shows on television.

Pan Am. Has anybody seen it?

Playboy? Haven’t seen it either. Any takers?

Two Broke Girls? Don’t watch sitcoms.

The Closer just finished its run. One of the best shows on TV.

CSI.Ted Danson has created an interesting persona and it must be that I am hopelessly addicted. Good show.

Person of Interest. Have not watched, but every Lost fan must tune in. Right? Yeah, Lost. That was the show that promised me that they were not in Purgatory. Nice work, guys.

Unforgettable. Good script, good concept.

Charley’s Angels? A remake? Why bother?

A Gifted Man. Somehow, I think this one won’t last too long. His ex-wife comes back as a ghost. (WHEW! That’s a thought! The room is spinning!)

I nearly forgot to post this, and that would have been an unfortunate injustice. The link to the followup is above.

And I am pleased for my old friend, Lu. I hope he gets his life straightened out.
