Who is Rush Limbaugh?

Of all people, I need to be exactly clear on this one. Some folks (mistakenly) believe that I do, or should, carry some sort of hostility for the nationally syndicated radio personality. Far from it. He is a talented and professional broadcaster.

Unfortunately, that is not saying much.

Of course he wants Barack Obama to fail. He is a one man industry devoted to the economic well being of Rush Limbaugh. He makes (at least) $15 million every year attending to the selfish needs of his right wing owners. He lives in luxurious seclusion, shielded from the maddening rush of ordinary people.

In scrupulous fairness, it is often said that I was “out of touch” with my listeners. This means that I did not dutifully parrot whatever the most recent public opinion poll or consultant’s memo professed. Last time I checked, Pulaski County and much of Arkansas has been fairly receptive to Democratic candidates. Since I left full time employment as a talk show host, I have developed a greater sense of my evangelical leanings. I always know where my audience is, and I have enough respect not to misrepresent myself.

But, enough about Pat Lynch.

As long as there is an endless flow of money from conservative elites, Limbaugh is impermeable to criticism. He has no accountability, except to his wealthy masters.

Don’t tell me he is accountable to the ratings. With the cheerful assistance of Clear Channel, he has created something of a monopoly.

And before somebody pops in the crybaby background tape, it is a fact this particular program fultills a need in the market place and that he has a large following.

So Rush Limbaugh feels pretty good about himself today. He has cast his personal spell of doom on the new president, and been given the benefit of a cost free multi-million dollar ad campaign. The current round of public criticism enhances his tough guy image with the right wing core and generates new listeners.

He does not have a college education, and neither do i (although I am taking some graduate level theology courses these days). The nationally syndicated hero of conservatives thinks he is an authority on everything. That is what happens after 15 years of non-stop butt kissing from big money Republicans.

The fault is not his – not entirely.

Since so many people, more and more, refuse to hear reasoned arguments and practice mutual respect, this is what you ought to expect as a logical outcome.

Put Mr. Limbaugh in a larger perspective. Republicans lost congressional races and the presidency. They voted against the stimulus package along strict party lines. They are fresh out of ideas. All they have left is a meaningless and destructive opposition.
